Music goes way back to the beginning of time as we all know. But as time goes on new genres have been created constantly. The genres that are around today, go anywhere from Classical, to Rock n’ Roll, from Reggae, to Hip Hop and so on and so forth. The genre that my blog is based on though seems to be taking the world by storm today even though its been around for quite a while. The genre I happen to be talking about is Electric Dance Music (EDM). Now my blog is here to share my experiences with EDM festivals to others and gravitate new comers to the scene. I think its very important though before you jump right in to understand a little bit of history around EDM and its festivals. Electronic dance music goes back to the 1960’s but wasn’t really popularized until the late 70’s early 80’s when Disco music came about and was commercially advertised. After the Disco era died though it became pretty hidden again until the 90’s when new genres were created like techno and house. From then it really has grown into one of the most popular music genres through the early 2000’s to today. Now knowing the history of the music itself we can find about where these festivals came from. In an article written by Jason Newman titled “The Untold and Deeply Stoned Story of The First U.S. Rock Festival” on Rollingstone.com, he explains one of the first rock concerts in the U.S. called the Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountain Festival happened in 1967 and basically paved the way for one of the most historic festivals known called Woodstock. Today’s festival scene has really mimicked what Woodstock was and tends to have the word “hippie” thrown around it by the media all over. Because of these early festivals though we now have the platform to build new festivals on and attend. I believe that the people putting these festivals together look back in history to see what really worked and what did and use that to continually improve and expand the experience.
